Woodstock Elementary (Mandarin DLI)

a tuition-free public neighborhood school in Portland

K–5 · Public · Language Immersion · Mandarin · Portland Public Schools

5601 SE 50th Ave, Portland · Heidi Stoetzel Earle, Principal

Woodstock Elementary runs 2 K–5 strands in one building: Portland Public Schools' Mandarin–English Dual Language Immersion program and a neighborhood English program. The Mandarin program opened here in 1998, making it one of the first public Mandarin immersion programs in the U.S.

It follows PPS's 50:50 model: students spend half the day learning in Mandarin and half in English, with each grade taught by a paired Chinese DLI teacher and English DLI teacher. The neighborhood strand has 1 English classroom per grade through 3rd, then 2 blended 4th/5th classes. Immersion seats fill through the PPS lottery, and the pathway continues to Harrison Park Middle School and Cleveland High School.

Shu Ren of Portland, a parent nonprofit, supports the program at all 3 schools. The building also houses a special education CB Focus Classroom, and specialists teach art, music, PE, and library. Grow Portland lists Woodstock as a 2025–26 garden partner, and the PTA runs a long menu of after-school classes with scholarships.

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
