Woodlawn Elementary School

a tuition-free public neighborhood school in Portland

K–5 · Public · Neighborhood · STEM · Portland Public Schools

7200 NE 11th Ave, Portland · Andrea Porter-Lopez, Principal (Assistant Principal: Cezanne Tyner)

Woodlawn is a PK–5 PPS neighborhood school in Northeast Portland with about 305 students and a median class size of 17, well under the state's 23. It is a Code of Color school: students wear solid gray, white, or navy tops with tan, gray, navy, or black bottoms, with free dress on Fridays.

The school still brands itself a STEAM Planetary School, though its STEAM materials date to a grant from roughly a decade ago and no STEAM teacher is on the current staff list. Specialist teachers cover art, music, PE, and library, and a reading specialist and academic coach back literacy and math.

Woodlawn houses 2 Communication Behavior classrooms (K–2 and 3–5), a Learning Center, and a district special education preschool. As a SUN Community School run with Self Enhancement, Inc., it offers after-school tutoring and enrichment plus a weekly food pantry, and YMCA after-school care runs on site.

KGW's 2020 series "Inside Woodlawn" covered gentrification's effect on its families and its push to hire teachers of color. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4iAuFe7FA4)

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
