Winterhaven School

a tuition-free public focus option in Portland

K–8 · Public · Focus Option · STEM · Portland Public Schools

3830 SE 14th Ave, 97202 · Mark Sandilands, Principal

Winterhaven is a Portland Public Schools K–8 focus option built around science, technology, and math, with the arts folded in as STEAM. Its math sequence is the clearest marker: K–5 stays on grade level, then every middle schooler moves into a compressed track, so 6th grade covers most of 6th and part of 7th, 7th covers the rest of 7th and most of 8th, and 8th graders take Algebra 1-2 for high school credit.

Science follows the same arc, integrated with reading and social studies through 4th grade, then single-subject life, earth, and physical science in grades 5 to 7, and high school biology in 8th. Middle school teachers carry STEAM sections alongside their core subjects, and 6th and 7th graders take technology.

The K–5 side runs 1 classroom per grade, with specialists in art, PE, and library, and Spanish is offered in 8th grade. Admission is through the PPS lottery, so families from across the district share 1 small building. The school describes its approach as project-based and focused on real-world problem solving.

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
