a tuition-free public neighborhood school in Portland

K–5 · Public · Neighborhood · Portland Public Schools

7326 SE Flavel St, Portland · Heather Thompson, Principal

Whitman is a small PPS neighborhood K–5 on SE Flavel Street in Brentwood-Darlington, with a Head Start / PPS Early Learners Pre-K on the same campus, so younger siblings can start here at age 3 or 4. Classroom teaching is backed by a reading specialist, an instructional coach, and an ESL teacher for students still building English.

Specials are art, music, and PE, plus a teacher-librarian, and a Growing Gardens educator on staff teaches garden-based lessons. Special education runs through a Learning Center staffed by 3 teacher positions and 6 paraeducators, with a counselor, a social worker, and a school psychologist on site.

Whitman is a SUN Community School: Impact NW runs after-school classes Monday through Thursday until 5 pm, with reading, science, sports, and dance rotating by term. Before- and after-school childcare is separate, through Champions, with students bused to the Kelly Elementary site. An active PTA meets monthly and organizes family nights and a bike bus.

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
