West Sylvan Middle School (Spanish DLI)

a tuition-free public neighborhood school in Portland

6–8 · Public · Language Immersion · Spanish · Portland Public Schools

8111 SW West Slope Dr, Portland · Dr. Jill Hunt, Principal

West Sylvan is the Lincoln cluster's comprehensive neighborhood middle school (6–8) and runs the IB Middle Years Programme framework school-wide, an inquiry-based approach that shapes how every subject is taught.

It also hosts the cluster's Spanish Dual Language Immersion continuation: the cohort starts at Ainsworth Elementary, moves through 3 grade-level immersion teachers here, and continues to Lincoln High School (for those DLI students zoned for Lincoln, others continue at their zoned DLI highschool). Native Spanish speakers not already in the cohort may test in, and 8th graders take Spanish II.

Every day includes a 30-minute advisory used for Wayfinder SEL lessons, AVID study and executive-functioning skills, clubs, and assemblies, and AVID is also offered as an elective at each grade.

Electives are unusually deep for a PPS middle school: a three-level band plus 2 jazz groups, 3 choirs, Beginning and Advanced Dance, Art, STEAM with a 6th grade Robotics section, a 7th grade Biotech science strand, French, and a director-led drama program.

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
