Vernon K-8 is a Northeast Portland neighborhood school where students stay from kindergarten through 8th grade, with 3 kindergarten classes and 2 classes per grade through 5th. Middle school is departmentalized, with separate language arts, social studies, math, and science teachers, a Health and Leadership class, and daily Spanish.
Every grade has visual art, music, and PE, and the library specialist also teaches design technology. Garden Education is a full academic program: a coordinator teaches seed-to-harvest science in 30 raised beds, fruit trees, and a native garden, runs weekly recess gardening for every grade, and leads a K–2 Garden Club, a 3–5 Cooking Club, and an ELD garden club.
Vernon is an Oregon Green School, and a PTA STEAM committee brings in partners like OMSI and the Columbia Slough Watershed Council for a STEAM Night and STEAM Fair. An OT-run Sensory Room and a counselors' Calming Room give students places to reset.
Vernon was an IB World School for years; its 2026-27 handbook says it is no longer IB-authorized but still describes a 5th Grade Exhibition and 8th Grade Community Project.

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
Official PPS lottery results, 2025-26 & 2026-27 combined: offers made ÷ families still in the running (offered + waitlisted); applications cancelled for a higher-ranked school excluded. pps.net › prior transfer data. Slots reset every year.
