Tucker Maxon School is an independent preschool–5th grade school where deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children learn in the same classrooms as typical hearing peers. It is an auditory-verbal school: DHH students learn to listen and speak using hearing aids, cochlear implants, and FM/DM systems, and ASL is offered as an after-school club rather than in class.
Teachers of the deaf check every DHH student's devices daily and give 20 minutes of individualized speech, language, or academic support each day, and an on-site audiologist and speech-language pathologist work alongside classroom teachers. Classrooms use sound-field systems, elementary classes top out at 12–14 students, and the school reports an 8:1 student-to-educator ratio.
The curriculum follows Oregon's Common Core standards, folds science and social studies into student-driven projects, and teachers are trained in the Orton-Gillingham reading approach. Students take MAP Growth assessments each trimester. Every grade has weekly art and music, and PE is daily in a full gym with a climbing wall.
Tuition: $1,485/mo – $1,750/mo (2026–27 range)

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
Official PPS lottery results, 2025-26 & 2026-27 combined: offers made ÷ families still in the running (offered + waitlisted); applications cancelled for a higher-ranked school excluded. pps.net › prior transfer data. Slots reset every year.
