The Ivy School is a tuition-free Montessori charter school in North Portland, serving Kindergarten through 8th grade, with an emphasis on student creativity/individuality and an explicitly stated anti-racist, anti-bias stance as part of the school community’s commitments.

Academically, Ivy describes a classic Montessori throughline: students move at an individual pace, teachers “follow the child” by adapting work to students’ interests/aptitudes, and classrooms are multi-age, so older students lead and younger students learn by modeling, supported by hands-on Montessori materials designed to make abstract concepts tangible. Practically, Ivy's blended classrooms feature a lower Elementary 1st/2nd/3rd class of 25 with one lead teacher and one assistant, an upper El 4th/5th/6th class of 25 with one lead teacher and one assistant, and 7th and 8th grades together in a class of up to 50 students with 2 lead teachers. In Ivy’s daily rhythm, students plan their day within the curriculum (with teacher guidance and goals), while building core skills in reading/writing/arithmetic and extending into areas like history, geography, botany/zoology, and more.
