Sunstone is an AMI-affiliated Montessori school on two campuses, serving children from 16 months through 8th grade. Toddler, Primary, and Elementary classrooms are on the Woodstock campus in SE Portland; the Milwaukie campus hosts Toddler and Primary rooms plus the Middle School. Every lead Guide holds AMI certification for the level they teach.

Primary classrooms (ages 3–6, including kindergarten) have up to 25 children with 1 Guide and 2 Assistants. Elementary classrooms (grades 1–6, split into Lower and Upper) have up to 30 children with 1 Guide and 1 Assistant, built around Great Lessons, long uninterrupted work periods, and small-group Going Out trips the children plan themselves.

A Spanish teacher visits each classroom weekly, and Elementary students have PE weekly. The 7th–8th grade Middle School is land-based: students run a micro-economy selling blueberry preserves and stationery, care for the goats, work through 3 to 6 week studies such as forest ecology and weaving and carving, meet 1:1 with a guide every week, and take a 3-night fall expedition to the Andrews Experimental Forest.

The school holds Premier status with Oregon Green Schools.
