Shining Star Waldorf School

a private school in Portland

K–8 · Private · Waldorf

4227 N Lombard St, Portland · No head of school; teacher-led with a parent-majority board

Shining Star Waldorf School is a small private K–8 in North Portland that describes itself as screen-free, arts-integrated, and nature-connected, with a tuition below most Portland-area Waldorf schools by design. The core week runs Monday through Thursday.

Grades 1–8 follow the Waldorf model: a class teacher stays with the group for multiple years while subject teachers bring flute, choir, strings, middle school band, handwork, folk dance, games and movement, and Japanese. Early childhood is the Linden Tree Kindergarten, a play-based indoor program for ages 4–6 with a 9:00–1:00 day.

Fridays are optional and outdoors: the Osoberry Forest Kindergarten takes 5- and 6-year-olds into Portland-area natural sites, and the Friday Nature Immersion program does the same for grades 1–8, with outside students welcome. Need-based tuition reduction is offered first come, first served with an April 1 deadline.

The school is teacher-run with a parent-majority board, and families are expected to take part in a full calendar of seasonal festivals, a monthly Parent Council, and an annual auction.

Tuition: $8,300 - $11,750 (2026-2027 range)

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
