Shining Star Friday Nature Immersion

a public alternative program in Portland

1–8 · Alternative · Waldorf · Homeschool Hybrid

4227 N Lombard St, Portland · Kai William, Nature Immersion Coordinator

Friday Nature Immersion is Shining Star Waldorf School's full-day outdoor program for grades 1 through 8, meeting Fridays from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from September through June. There is no campus day: the group travels to rotating natural areas around the Portland metro, with recent sites including Wapato Access Greenway, Dabney State Park, Sandy River Delta, and Powell Butte. Any child who turns 6 by January 1 of the school year is eligible, including children not enrolled at Shining Star, which makes this one of the few Portland-area programs a homeschooling family can join one day a week without committing to a full school.

The day follows a Waldorf outdoor rhythm: gathering in a circle, singing, poetry, games, and a story before setting out. Children forage for edible plants, build with fallen branches and stones, follow creeks, and make things like blackberry jam. More than 40 students attend with 6 staff, working in groups of 8 to 10 children per instructor. The program runs rain or shine with no indoor alternative. A separate Osoberry Friday group serves kindergarten-age children at the same location.

* A separate Osoberry group runs the same Friday at the same sites for kindergarten-age children, with its own rhythm rather than joining the older students.

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
