Sauvie Island School

a tuition-free public charter in Portland

K–8 · Public · Charter · Place-based · Scappoose School District

14445 NW Charlton Rd, Portland · Darla Meeuwsen, Executive Director

Sauvie Island School is a K–8 public charter school located on Sauvie Island, chartered through the Scappoose School District though it draws students from Portland and surrounding communities. The school's philosophy systematically integrates Place-Based Education, Project-Based Learning, and Thematic Instruction into a standards-based curriculum, using the island's unique agricultural and ecological setting as the primary learning environment. Students learn through the values of stewardship, with the community and natural surroundings extending the classroom beyond four walls and immersing children in the local heritage and cultural landscape. Every student is also guaranteed time in the school's STEAM lab, where design work runs from sketching and drafting through CAD to building and redesign.

Community projects give teachers and students the opportunity to solve real-life problems and meet authentic local needs, with partnerships that have included the West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District and other local environmental partners. The curriculum integrates the island's natural environment across core subjects (language arts, math, science, and social studies), developing students who can think critically, communicate effectively, and see academic content in the context of the natural world. Middle school students have additional opportunities including electives, boat building, 8th grade capstone projects, and National Junior Honor Society.
