Rachel Carson is a Beaverton School District option program for grades 6-8, housed at Cedar Park Middle School and serving 180 students taught by 6 core teachers. The curriculum is integrated rather than departmental: science, math, language arts and social studies are taught through an environmental science lens, cycling through 3 themes of systems, change, and sustainability.

Almost weekly field experiences take students into regional ecosystems, where they gather authentic data for community partners working on restoration, preservation and monitoring. Service learning is a stated foundation of the program, not an add-on. All state and Beaverton School District learning targets are taught within this framework.

The program is unusual in one practical respect: it is entirely community-funded, with the Friends of Rachel Carson nonprofit raising the operating budget that covers site visit transportation, entrance fees, science fair costs and classroom supplies. Rachel Carson suits students who want depth in science and are ready for a heavy field schedule.
