Portland YouthBuilders (PYB) serves older youth and young adults with two tuition-free pathways: YouthBuild (ages 17–24) pairs diploma or GED completion with construction training, typically over 6 to 9 months and up to 12, and Bridge (ages 18–26), a 9-week intensive construction pre-apprenticeship for those who already hold a diploma or GED. Both pay students while they train, YouthBuild up to $520 per month and Bridge up to $15 per hour. The model blends academics, paid hands-on jobsite training, counseling and leadership development, career coaching, and long-term alumni support. PYB is an accredited diploma-granting high school and a GED test center for enrolled students, part of the AmeriCorps and national YouthBuild networks, with both programs funded in part through Worksystems.
As a state-certified pre-apprenticeship approved by the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries, PYB students get direct or preferred entry into many local apprenticeship programs. Construction students split time between classroom or shop and active jobsites, working in excavation, concrete, framing, and finish carpentry on affordable homes, and earn BOLI, OSHA, and CPR certifications. Bridge runs in Portland and Beaverton for Multnomah and Washington County residents. The program keeps rigor high and support higher: every student has an assigned counselor and career coach plus a 4-person case management team that meets weekly.
*PYB previously offered a technology pathway alongside construction, but its technology page has been removed and the current program page lists construction only, so confirm available pathways before applying.

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
Official PPS lottery results, 2025-26 & 2026-27 combined: offers made ÷ families still in the running (offered + waitlisted); applications cancelled for a higher-ranked school excluded. pps.net › prior transfer data. Slots reset every year.
