Portland Village School

a tuition-free public charter in Portland

4650 S Macadam Ave, Portland · Dr. Chrissy Constant, Executive Director

Portland Village School is a public charter school in Portland serving kindergarten through 8th grade, offering tuition-free Waldorf-inspired education as a member of the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education. The school's curriculum is organized around 3–4 week Main Lesson Blocks, immersive, interdisciplinary units that integrate science, social studies, ELA, math, and the arts into a single sustained arc of study. All students in grades 1–8 attend weekly classes in Spanish, music, handwork arts, and physical education, while daily morning routines of poems, songs, and cross-body movement are used to build neural connections and set the tone for focused learning. The school keeps screens out of the early grades, runs a junk-food-free campus, and holds a dress code against commercial branding.

Handwork is a distinctive part of the program: students learn to knit, crochet, sew, spin yarn, and do basic woodworking, skills the school views as developing sequencing, planning, and fine motor capacities that transfer directly into academic work. The school follows Common Core State Standards and students in grades 3–8 take annual SBAC assessments. The whole-child philosophy, described as developing head, heart, and hands, runs through everything, with social-emotional learning and restorative justice practice built into the daily rhythm of school life. PVS provides no bus service, so families arrange their own transportation.
