Portland Jewish Academy

a faith-based private school in Portland

K–8 · Private · Religious · Jewish

6651 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland · Steve Albert; Principal: Merrill Hendin, Executive Director

Portland Jewish Academy is an independent, inclusive Jewish community day school serving students from early childhood through 8th grade, open to families of all backgrounds and faiths. The core curriculum integrates math, science, and language arts with Jewish Studies, Hebrew, music, arts, and wellness. Hebrew is a core subject for every student in K–8, taught as a living, communicative language on a proficiency-based model, with beginner-level placement and academic support for students who arrive with little or no Hebrew. Jewish Studies combines Torah and other Jewish texts, holidays, and rituals, with depth and focus growing as students move through the grades. Students learn in hevrutah (study pairs) from the early grades, and Middle School Jewish Studies is organized around Hillel's three questions, closing in 8th grade with a capstone.

Specials include art, music, PE, library, gardening, and a STEAM Makerspace where students explore design, engineering, and innovation. Lower School students use the Makerspace weekly, while Middle School students take 15-week exploratory deep dives and follow a 10-day rotating block schedule rather than a fixed weekly timetable, which the school says opens up longer stretches for inquiry and exploration. The school is accredited by the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS).

Tuition: $26,989 - $28,213 (2026-2027 range)

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
