Peninsula Elementary School

a tuition-free public neighborhood school in Portland

K–5 · Public · Neighborhood · Portland Public Schools

8125 N Emerald Ave, Portland · David Martinez, Interim Principal

Peninsula's academic program follows Common Core State Standards across core subjects, with dedicated enrichment teachers in art, music, PE, and library. Each is a subject specialist who collaborates with homeroom teachers to make cross-curricular connections so students see learning as integrated rather than siloed. The school counts its counselor among the enrichment team, so social-emotional learning sits alongside the academic day rather than outside it. Several grades run as blends, with 1st and 2nd together and 4th and 5th together. The school is also midway through a multi-year green schoolyard conversion, turning courtyard asphalt into garden beds and habitat with Depave and grant funding. Families should know that in December 2025 staff unions and more than 50 parents filed a grievance over classroom behavior support and special education staffing, an open issue worth raising directly with the principal.

*The school is currently led by an interim principal, and special education here is mid-transition to the district's neighborhood inclusion model, with integration reported in place for kindergarten and 1st grade as of early 2026. This shift is PPS policy rather than a Peninsula decision, so the December 2025 grievance over behavior support and staffing is best read as an early signal of a transition EVERY PPS school is headed into, not as a verdict on this school.
