Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD) is the state's public school for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, run by the Oregon Department of Education on a 37.3-acre campus in Salem. It serves kindergarten through 12th grade, plus a Community Transition Program to age 21, and enrolled 104 students in 2024-25.
Instruction is ASL-English bilingual: American Sign Language is the language of the classroom alongside written English, and over half of the faculty are Deaf adults. Elementary teaching is thematic, built on Bridges in Mathematics, Writers' Workshop, ASL literature, and the Social Thinking curriculum. Middle and high school classes are grouped by academic need, so many are mixed-grade.
High schoolers can earn a Standard, Modified, or Extended Diploma or a Certificate of Completion, and a Community-Based Instruction track teaches functional academics, work skills, and community living. Residential students live on campus Sunday evening through Friday at no cost, and the home district arranges the trip.
Placement is made with the family's consent through the student's IEP or 504 team and reviewed each year, and a child does not need to be profoundly deaf to attend.

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
Official PPS lottery results, 2025-26 & 2026-27 combined: offers made ÷ families still in the running (offered + waitlisted); applications cancelled for a higher-ranked school excluded. pps.net › prior transfer data. Slots reset every year.
