Oregon Episcopal School (Upper)

a faith-based private school in Portland

9–12 · Private · Religious · Christian

6300 SW Nicol Rd, Portland · Sarah Grenert-Funk (Head of Upper School)

Oregon Episcopal School's Upper School enrolls 328 students in grades 9-12, including 50 boarders, and is the only Portland school with a 9-12 boarding program. Students take 5 or 6 courses a semester in classes averaging 14. The curriculum is inquiry-based rather than AP-driven: 5 AP courses are offered in math and world languages, Honors sections run across every department, and OES neither weights GPAs nor ranks students. Ninth graders are graded pass/fail their first semester to encourage experimentation with how they learn.

Science runs deepest. Every student completes an original Science Inquiry Project each year within each of the 3 required core science courses, and top work advances from the Aardvark Science Expo to the state and international fairs. English 11 culminates in the Literary Journalism Project, a reported 8-10 page article built from a site visit, an expert interview, and research. Required Religion and Philosophy courses are non-doctrinaire and survey world religions and ethics. Graduation requires 21 credits, 1.5 years of arts, and 80 hours of Community Engagement. During Winterim, the week before spring break, students travel for immersive programs in Oregon, across the country, and abroad.

Tuition: $48,200 - $82,200 (2026-2027 range for 9-12)

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
