Mt. Tabor Middle School is the largest middle school in Southeast Portland, and alongside its comprehensive neighborhood program it houses 3 others: the district's Japanese Dual Language Immersion program, an Intensive Skills Program, and the Columbia Regional Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program. Students come from across the metro area and beyond, not only from the attendance boundary.
The school names literacy and math fluency as its academic focus, and every student takes a daily advisory period built on restorative justice practices, social and emotional learning, and organizational support. Enrichment courses run inside the school day and include AVID, art, band, drama, creative dramatics, computer science, engineering, technology, and Spanish for high school credit.
8th graders in the immersion program may apply for the Japan Research Residency, a 2 week spring exchange across the Hiroshima, Hyogo, and Kyoto prefectures. The residency is facilitated rather than sponsored by PPS, is not required, and carries academic and behavior requirements plus a family cost that the parent nonprofit Oya No Kai raises scholarship funds to offset. Incoming 6th graders are paired with 8th grade mentors through the WEB program, and SUN Community School extends the day with sports and clubs. Immersion students continue to Grant High School, while neighborhood students typically feed to Franklin depending on home address.

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
Official PPS lottery results, 2025-26 & 2026-27 combined: offers made ÷ families still in the running (offered + waitlisted); applications cancelled for a higher-ranked school excluded. pps.net › prior transfer data. Slots reset every year.
