a tuition-free public focus option in Portland

K–12 · Public · Focus Option · Expeditionary · Portland Public Schools

2033 NW Glisan St, 97209 · Dr. Ashlee Hudson

MLC’s expeditionary “walkabout” curriculum immerses students in community-based projects, real-world problem solving, and integrated thematic studies. Students participate in internships, service learning, and fieldwork that connect academic subjects to authentic contexts.

The program emphasizes self-direction, critical thinking, and collaboration, with students frequently working in mixed-age groups to learn from and support one another. Teachers design learning experiences that span disciplines, blending the arts, sciences, and humanities into rich, connected units.

This approach fosters adaptability, resilience, and a sense of agency, preparing graduates to navigate both academic challenges and the demands of the wider world.
