a tuition-free public neighborhood school in Portland

9–12 · Public · Language Immersion · Vietnamese · Portland Public Schools

2735 NE 82nd Ave, Portland · Adam Skyles

Leodis V. McDaniel High School provides a comprehensive academic experience highlighted by its unique partnership with Portland Community College. McDaniel students utilize the Expanded Options program to access tuition-free college courses, with the district typically covering the costs of tuition and required materials. This collegiate focus is bolstered by a robust Advanced Placement curriculum featuring over twenty courses and direct dual-credit agreements through both Portland Community College and Clackamas Community College. The school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings are notably diverse, ranging from a state-of-the-art engineering and robotics MakerSpace to a specialized biomedical health sciences track and a unique sustainable agriculture program that utilizes an on-site urban farm.

The campus also serves as a critical hub for language and global studies, acting as the home for the Portland International Scholars Academy (PISA) to support newcomer students, Vietnamese DLI, and Spanish DLI. Furthermore, the school is expanding its linguistic reach as it becomes the official high school site for the PPS Chinese Immersion program beginning in the 2025–2026 school year. With the addition of the Chinese Immersion program this year, McDaniel now serves as a major hub for three of the district's five dual-language pathways, reflecting the high school's status as one of the most linguistically and ethnically diverse campuses in Oregon. Students are supported throughout their tenure by structured advisory periods and a dedicated College & Career Center that assists with postsecondary navigation and financial aid.
