HOPE Chinese Charter School

a tuition-free public charter in Beaverton

K–8 · Public · Charter · Language Immersion · Beaverton School District (Charter)

3500 SW 104th Ave, Beaverton · Yitong Wu, Interim Principal

HOPE's immersion model pairs Chinese and English educators who synchronize lessons to deliver consistent instruction across both languages, and the program is benchmarked against ACTFL's national World-Readiness Standards for language learning. The immersion model shifts by grade band: K-2 students learn 65% in Chinese and 35% in English, grades 3-5 move to a 50/50 split, and by middle school (6-8) the balance flips to 35% Chinese/65% English as students prepare for high school. Students develop biliteracy through HOPE's custom spiral performance-based Chinese curriculum (incorporating Huanle Huoban textbooks and Level Learning) alongside Amplify CKLA for English language arts, which integrates science and social studies knowledge units. Math follows Singapore Math methods. Chinese science classes conduct hands-on experiments twice weekly, reinforcing vocabulary and concepts covered in English science. The school offers support for English Language Learners, Talented and Gifted students, and implements a Multi-Tiered System of Support.

Students gain an average of two additional instructional hours per week compared to neighborhood public schools, and the immersion environment extends beyond the classroom: Chinese-speaking staff work at the front desk, in IT support, lunch service, and as recess monitors, creating authentic language-use opportunities throughout the day. Middle schoolers also take part in Oregon's Outdoor School program and choose electives, with Chinese Cooking and Yearbook among the most popular. Cultural learning is woven into the academic year through Chinese holidays, arts and crafts, musical performances (including an annual Lunar New Year Celebration), and events like the International Festival. Families describe HOPE as a tight-knit community with high academic and behavioral standards, strong parent involvement, and a globally diverse student body representing over 19 different home languages.

*HOPE's academic results have been notable: in 2023-24, its 4th grade cohort ranked #1 statewide in both ELA and math, and its Talented and Gifted middle schoolers outperformed TAG-identified peers in Beaverton School District's own Summa gifted program.
