Harriet Tubman Middle School reopened in fall 2018 following advocacy from Black community leaders who championed restoring this historically significant school to the Albina neighborhood. The school offers Mandarin Chinese Dual Language Immersion continuation for students from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, with graduates continuing to Jefferson High School for advanced Chinese studies. Students have access to specialized facilities including science labs, a dance studio added during the 2018 renovation, library, and TAG programming. Harriet Tubman is also one of only six PPS schools with a district-funded MakerSpace, run through the PPS STEAM department's Integrated STEAM Education initiative. MakerTechs at each site "work with teachers to create project-based learning opportunities that align with what they are learning in the classroom." The school operates as a SUN Community School, offering after-school support and enrichment activities. AVID runs in 7th and 8th grade, and the school houses a student-run news program. The Latino Network embeds three staff on campus for culturally specific student and family engagement alongside the Maurice Lucas Foundation mentorship program.
The campus underwent an emergency fast-track renovation in summer 2018, which included a complete roof replacement, new HVAC system with advanced air filtration, curtainwall replacement, foundation improvements, new electrical service, and renovations to classrooms, labs, and special education spaces. The student body is notably diverse, serving the largest number of Black middle school students in the district.

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
Official PPS lottery results, 2025-26 & 2026-27 combined: offers made ÷ families still in the running (offered + waitlisted); applications cancelled for a higher-ranked school excluded. pps.net › prior transfer data. Slots reset every year.
