Franklin High School (Spanish and Russian DLI continuation)

a tuition-free public neighborhood school in Portland

9–12 · Public · Neighborhood · Portland Public Schools

5405 SE Woodward St, Portland · Dr. Zulema Naegele

Franklin is a large, welcoming neighborhood high school serving grades 9–12, with about 1,700 students who benefit from the feel of a comprehensive campus and the resources of a big district. Families often choose Franklin for its academic mix: Advanced Placement (AP), dual-credit opportunities with Portland Community College, and hands-on Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathways in areas like industrial technology, business, computer science, and video production that help teens connect learning to careers. The school also hosts two dual language immersion continuation tracks: Spanish (from Atkinson and Lent elementaries via Harrison Park Middle School) and Russian (from Kelly Elementary via Lane Middle School), plus coursework in French, German, and Mandarin Chinese.

The school pairs strong core academics with a vibrant arts program anchored by a modern Center for the Arts and a large theater. Students can find their place on stage through drama and the Dance at Franklin program, in studios with four visual arts teachers, in the Franklin Film School, or in band and choir ensembles. Daily supports include an AVID program, college and career coordinators, and a culture that encourages students to stretch, reflect, and plan their next steps. Student life is busy; clubs, OSAA 6A PIL athletics, and performance seasons give kids many ways to belong, while the renovated campus (opened 2017) blends historic character with light-filled learning spaces.

*About DLI feeders: Russian DLI follows a single guaranteed pathway: Kelly Elementary to Lane Middle School to Franklin High School. Spanish DLI works differently. At the end of 8th grade, Spanish DLI students are assigned to a regional high school based on their home address, not the middle school they attended. For the Southeast region, that means Franklin or Cleveland depending on where you live. Families in other parts of the city may be assigned to Lincoln, Roosevelt, or McDaniel instead. Enrolling in a Spanish DLI elementary school in Franklin's neighborhood does not guarantee a seat in Franklin's Spanish DLI track at 9th grade.
