Be aware that Portland Public Schools (PPS) is sunsetting the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at the elementary level as a proposed budget cut for the 2025-2026 school year due to a significant budget deficit.**
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary offers a 50/50 Mandarin Dual Language Immersion program alongside an English-only strand, allowing students to build bilingual fluency while mastering core subjects. Literacy and math instruction are paired with rich arts integration, community-based projects, and a focus on equity and representation. The school also houses the King School Museum of Contemporary Art (KSMoCA) where students collaborate with internationally renowned contemporary artists on exhibitions and projects, learning museum practice by participating as curators, preparators, and docents. The Mandarin program connects with the school's International Baccalaureate approach, emphasizing global citizenship and cultural competency. This combination of dual language instruction, hands-on arts experiences, and IB framework prepares students to engage with diverse perspectives and think critically about their role in the world.

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
Official PPS lottery results, 2025-26 & 2026-27 combined: offers made ÷ families still in the running (offered + waitlisted); applications cancelled for a higher-ranked school excluded. pps.net › prior transfer data. Slots reset every year.
