Clark Elementary School (Mandarin DLI)

a tuition-free public neighborhood school in Portland

K–5 · Public · Language Immersion · Mandarin · Portland Public Schools (DLI)

1231 SE 92nd Ave, Portland · Tara Bourland

Clark Elementary offers a 50/50 Mandarin-English immersion program that builds bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural students while covering core academic subjects. The curriculum integrates Chinese culture and language alongside English literacy, math, science, and social studies, giving students a global perspective from an early age. Art, music, and physical education specialists round out the program. The school uses a PBIS-based behavior recognition framework to foster a positive, inclusive school culture.

Since the 2023–2024 school year, Clark has operated as a co-located school — the result of a district rebalancing where neighborhood students from the former Harrison Park K–8 moved to the Clark campus. The school now serves two distinct groups under one roof: neighborhood families in the English-only track and lottery-placed students in the Chinese DLI track. The DLI program feeds into the Mandarin DLI program at Harrison Park Middle School and then Cleveland High School, offering families a complete K–12 bilingual pathway.

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
