Cedarwood Waldorf School

a private school in Portland

K–8 · Private · Waldorf

3030 SW 2nd Ave, Portland · Dr. Joseph Doucette (Head of School)

Cedarwood Waldorf School offers a Waldorf curriculum infused with the cultural vibrancy of its urban setting. Academic subjects are taught through storytelling, art, music, and movement, following the developmental stages of childhood. A central feature is "looping," where one teacher stays with the same class from first through eighth grade to build a stable, long-term relationship. The school includes specialized subjects often missing in other programs, including both Spanish and Japanese starting in first grade, practical skills like woodworking and handwork, Cyber Civics (digital citizenship curriculum, grades 6-8), and a screen-free focus in the early grades to emphasize imagination and sensory experience.

Instead of using mass-produced textbooks, students record what they learn in "Main Lesson Books," which they write and draw by hand to summarize their studies in math, science, and history. This method emphasizes process and memory over rote testing, aiming to produce graduates who can think for themselves and solve problems without a pre-set manual.

Tuition: $17,750 - $21,400 (2026-2027 range)

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
