Boise-Eliot/Humboldt (BEH) is distinguished by its identity as a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) school. The curriculum is driven by inquiry-based learning and design thinking, featuring regular "engineering challenges" and integrated arts projects supported by The Right Brain Initiative. The school serves as a profound cultural anchor for Portland’s African American community; despite gentrification in the surrounding neighborhood, many displaced families continue to commute back to BEH, maintaining a multi-generational legacy of attendance. The school's community commitments are formalized through an on-site Black Parent Initiative partnership and the Betty Campbell/Jeanette Crawley Scholarship Fund, a college scholarship for BEH alumni pursuing Oregon colleges or HBCUs, established by a former principal to ensure Boise-Eliot students had a path beyond elementary school.
Academically, the school also utilizes AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) strategies even at the elementary level, focusing on organizational skills and college readiness culture from an early age. Arts, music, and physical education are part of the weekly schedule, rounding out a well-balanced academic experience.
BEH requires uniforms daily except Fridays and spirit week (navy blue, yellow, or white collared tops and khaki or navy pants), uncommon for PPS neighborhood school.

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
Official PPS lottery results, 2025-26 & 2026-27 combined: offers made ÷ families still in the running (offered + waitlisted); applications cancelled for a higher-ranked school excluded. pps.net › prior transfer data. Slots reset every year.
