Primerly field report
a tuition-free public neighborhood school in Portland
K–5 · Public · Language Immersion · Spanish · Portland Public Schools
1710 N Humboldt St, Portland · Niki Johnson
Located in the historic Overlook neighborhood, Beach Elementary is defined by its "two-schools-in-one" structure, serving both as a standard neighborhood school and a magnet for Spanish Dual Language Immersion (DLI). The immersion strand follows a rigorous 90/10 model, meaning Kindergarten students receive 90% of their instruction in Spanish, gradually shifting to a 50/50 balance by 4th grade to ensure full biliteracy. 4th/5th grade DLI classrooms are blended.
This program runs alongside a traditional English-only track for neighborhood families, creating a campus culture that is linguistically diverse but academically separated during core instructional hours. As a designated SUN Community School (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods), Beach also functions as a social service hub, providing extensive after-school enrichment, food pantry access, and family support systems that go far beyond the typical school day. Families interested in the immersion track must apply via the PPS lottery, while the English track remains guaranteed for those living within the attendance boundary.

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
Official PPS lottery results, 2025-26 & 2026-27 combined: offers made ÷ families still in the running (offered + waitlisted); applications cancelled for a higher-ranked school excluded. pps.net › prior transfer data. Slots reset every year.
