Atkinson's 90/10 Spanish dual-language model begins with most instruction in Spanish in the early grades, gradually shifting to a balanced bilingual format. This approach fosters strong language skills alongside core academic achievement. Lessons incorporate Latin American culture, history, and literature, creating a rich, multicultural learning environment brought to life on campus through a native plant garden, a multicultural food garden, and an ecologically friendly outdoor classroom. The school's mission is to be a welcoming community that celebrates diversity, inspires confidence, and empowers children to thrive. Three dedicated ESL teachers support the school's 25% English Language Learner population, reflecting an unusually deep commitment to language access. The school emphasizes equity, inclusion, and community partnerships. Students graduate ready for the middle school continuation of the Spanish Immersion pathway.

Atkinson is also one of the more comprehensively staffed K-5 schools in PPS for students with disabilities with an on-site occupational therapist, physical therapist, and adapted PE teacher alongside three special education teachers and a reading specialist. Strong fit for families who need robust support alongside a bilingual program.
