Astor K-8 School

a tuition-free public neighborhood school in Portland

K–8 · Public · Neighborhood · Portland Public Schools

5601 N Yale St, Portland · Blake Robertson

Astor offers a whole-child approach in a neighborhood school setting with an explicit mission to disrupt the predictability of outcomes based on race, specifically for Black and Native students. The curriculum includes TAG (Talented and Gifted) cluster groups, STEAM enrichment activities, and culturally responsive teaching practices.

Students engage in literacy and math workshops, science investigations, and social studies units that highlight global awareness.

Upper elementary students benefit from 4th/5th blended classrooms (they are 4 years into the blended program and seeing success while many PPS K-8s are just beginning blending for 26/27), and community partnerships with COBM Mentors and the Latino Network's SOL program bring additional adult mentorship into the school.

With a focus on inclusivity and hands-on learning, Astor prepares students to be thoughtful, engaged citizens.

Your odds in the lottery

Seats here aren’t first-come; they’re drawn by lottery. Each circle below is a tenth of the families who applied over the last two springs and stayed in the running (didn’t take a higher-ranked school). Filled circles got a yes.
